Grants Announced for 2012-2013 French-American Jazz Exchange
Press Releases
Grants Announced for 2012-2013 French-American Jazz Exchange
Baltimore, MD - September 20, 2012 - Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and FACE (French-American Cultural Exchange) have announced five grants totaling $111,930 in support of the 2012-2013 French-American Jazz Exchange ("FAJE") program. FAJE is dedicated to furthering the creative and professional development of jazz artists from France and the United States through the interchange of artistic practice and exposure to new constituencies. FAJE is made possible through the generous support of Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs de Musique (SACEM), Florence Gould Foundation and InstitutFrançais.Applications to the program were assessed through an adjudicated review process. Four experienced artists and arts professionals, two from France and two from the United States, were selected to review the applications and serve as panelists. The panel included:
• Reza Ackbaraly, Jazz & World Music Programmer, Mezzo TV, Paris, France
• Gerald Clayton, jazz artist, New York, NY
• Patricia Cruz, Executive Director, Harlem Stage, New York, NY
• Benoit Delbecq, jazz artist, Clichy, France
The panel recommended the following projects for funding:
Amir ElSaffar with Sylvain Barou
Iraqi-American trumpeter, dulcimer player and vocalist Amir ElSaffar and his New York-based colleagues Emmanuel During (violin, guitar, lute) and Mavrothi Kontanis (uod) will collaborate with Sylvain Barou (wooden flute) of Brittany and the Paris-based French-Iranian percussionist Keyvan Chemirani to compose new works that combine elements of jazz, Middle Eastern music and Celtic folk tunes. The project will include a five-day residency in New York, a three-day Paris residency, recorded live performances in both cities, and a studio recording.
Jeremy Udden with Nicolas Moreaux
American saxophonist Jeremy Udden and French bassist Nicolas Moreaux will collaboratively compose new jazz pieces influenced by the folk traditions of their respective countries. The composers will be joined by Americans Robert Stillmann (saxophone and Fender Rhodes) and R.J. Miller (drums) as well as the French banjo and guitar player Pierre Perchaud. The new work will be rehearsed and recorded in Paris and performed at venues in New York City and Boston. The composers and full band will also conduct a number of workshops for secondary school students during their tour of the northeastern United States
Larry Ochs with Didier Petit
The East West Collective is a collaboration of Americans Larry Ochs (saxophone) and Miya Masaoka (Japanese koto), Frenchmen Didier Petit (cello, voice) and Sylvain Kassap (clarinet), and the Chinese guzheng player and vocalist Xu Fengxia that combines the compositional structure and sounds of free jazz with traditional Eastern music forms. The project will support three concert engagements at prestigious venues in New York, San Francisco, and Seattle; and five engagements at important French jazz festivals in Brest, Nantes, Paris, Strasbourg, and Tours. The ensemble is also planning a studio recording session while in France.
Sylvain Rifflet with Jon Irabagon
Saxophonist and clarinetist Sylvain Rifflet and his French ensemble members Joce Menniel (flute, electronics), Phil Gordiani (guitar), and Benjamin Flament (percussion, electronics) will work with American saxophonist Jon Irabagon on a project that celebrates the work of the eccentric, yet influential, Blind American composer and street performer Moondog (Louis Hardin 1916-1999). The project will include the composing of new music, a premier of the work at the prestigious Banlieues Bleues Festival outside of Paris, and the recording of a studio album.
William Parker with François Tusques
The cultural threads that connect France with New Orleans and New York will be explored by the French American Peace Ensemble, which is comprised of Americans William Parker (bass), Hamid Drake (drums), and Kidd Jordon (saxophone); and French musicians François Tusques (piano) and Louis Sclavis (bass clarinet, saxophone). Parker will compose a new musical suite for the ensemble which will be performed at venues in New Orleans, New York and Seattle. The performance at the Vision Festival in New York will be filmed and recorded. Discussions are underway for festival performances in France as well as for a studio recording.
FAJE, co-administered by FACE and Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, annually awards approximately $100,000 in grants through a competitive application process to support projects that take place either in France or the United States and their territories or both, within a 16-month period. Individual artists or ensembles whose members are citizens or permanent residents of France or the United States and are based in their resident countries are eligible to participate in the program. Funding may be used towards artist stipends, communications, equipment and space rentals, marketing, recording and production fees, shipping, travel-related expenses, and visa fees.
Additional support is available to artists who received funding through FAJE for touring in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Presenters in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, U.S. Virgin Islands, and West Virginia are eligible to receive fee-subsidy for booking selected FAJE artists.
French applicants should contact Emmanuel Morlet, FAJE Program Officer and Director, Music Office, Cultural Services of the French Embassy at emmanuel.morlet@diplomatie.gouv.fr. American applicants should contact Josh Kohn, Program Officer, Jazz and Traditional Arts at Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation at josh@midatlanticarts.org.

First batch of V60 Plug-in Hybrid sold out - and rapid renewal of the model range in 2013
First batch of V60 Plug-in Hybrid sold out - and
rapid renewal of the model range in 2013
On top of launching the all-new V40 Cross
Country and V40 R-Design, Volvo Car Corporation revealed more exciting news at
the company's press conference at the 2012 Paris Motor Show on Thursday: the
first batch of the groundbreaking Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid is sold out before
the car has reached the showrooms - and the order books for next year's cars are
already filling up. Volvo also announced that the rapid renewal of the model
lineup is continuing next year.
"2013 will be one of the most intense years in the company's
history. Including the all-new V40 versions in 2012, we are renewing more or
less our whole model range in less than two years," said Doug Speck, Senior Vice
President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Car Corporation.
The V60 Plug-in Hybrid, the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid, is
another important part of Volvo Car Corporation's rapid transformation - and
Doug Speck is not surprised by the keen customer interest in the ingenious
model. "None of our competitors can offer customers an equally ingenious car.
Its uncompromising attitude to green motoring elevates hybrid technology to an
entirely new level," he said.
The first 1,000 units of the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid are only
available in a "Pure Limited" edition with Electric Silver livery. The
diesel-electric car is also distinguished by aero-designed 17-inch wheels,
integrated exhaust tailpipes and a number of bodywork features in glossy
black.
After this initial batch of 1,000 cars for model year 2013,
production of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid will increase to 5,000 cars as of model
year 2014.
The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid is the synthesis of close cooperation
between Volvo Car Corporation and Swedish electricity supplier Vattenfall. The
two companies have financed the development project jointly.
Three cars in one
The driver of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid is putting an end to
compromise via three driving mode buttons on the dashboard: Pure, Hybrid and
Power.
Fuel consumption is just 1.8 l/100 km (48 g CO2 /km) in Hybrid mode. In addition, the driver can
choose to cover up to 50 kilometres on electric power with zero emissions - or
release the combined capacity of the diesel engine and electric motor to create
a driving machine with 215+70 horsepower, 440+200 Nm of torque and acceleration
from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds.
A new, graphic interactive dashboard with personalised layout and
information enhances the intuitive and uncomplicated driver experience.
"This human-centric approach is what our Designed Around You
philosophy is all about. We have listened carefully to our customers and created
a unique, human-centric car that combines pure driving pleasure with outstanding
environmental responsibility," said Doug Speck.

About Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability. Naturopaths’ teach their patients to use diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting edge natural therapies to enhance their bodies’ ability to ward off and combat disease. They view the patient as a complex, interrelated system (a whole person), not as a clogged artery or a tumor. Naturopaths’ craft comprehensive treatment plans that blend the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to not only treat disease, but to also restore health.
Naturopathic Principles: Naturopathic Physicians practice the six fundamental principles of Naturopathic Medicine:
1-The healing power of nature: Trust in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself.
2-Identify and treat the causes: Look beyond the symptoms to the underlying cause.
3-First do no harm: Utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies.
4-Naturopaths as teacher: Educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining health.
4-Treat the whole person: View the body as an integrated whole in all its physical and spiritual dimensions.
6-Prevention: Focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.
Naturopaths’ strive to make naturopathic medicine available to everyone, and to increase recognition of Naturopaths as the identified authorities on natural medicine. Read more at www.icnmcongress.com

The Slovak French Project
Press release – Slovak-French project Something is Red going for a premiere in Lyon after succeeding in Košice
The experimental theatrical performance called ´Something is Red´, which had its premiere on April 29 in Košice, is to be given this weekend, July 5-6, to the French audience in Lyon. The project sprang from the cooperation of the French theatre Lá Hors De from Lyon and the Košice theatre known as Divadlo na peróne and became a supporting event of the application of Košice for nomination as European capital of Culture 2013.
The premiere of Something is Red in the Košice Barracks/Kulturpark was watched by several hundreds of people in the audience. The performance was being born for almost two months right in the premises of the Barracks/Kulturpark. The actors from Košice left for France on June 23 to practise their performancia with a new stage set.
“The time we had before the French premiere was used to adjust the project to the new stage and to cope with a bit altered cast. It was a sort of start anew, although we were already prepared to do it and we had some idea what we were going to do better,” revealed Zuzana Psotková of the theatre Divadlo na peróne about how it felt after almost two weeks of preparation in France. Zuzana will appear in Lyon along with her fellow-actors Peter Kočiš, Jana Wernerová and Alexandra Kupčíková who are to return to Košice on July 8.
The Something is Red project originated from the conversations with the people picked up at random in the streets of France, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. They would tell their own versions of the fairy-tale of Little Red Riding Hood. Alike Košice, Lyon where the group Lá Hors De is from, also applies for nomination as European Capital of Culture 2013. The Something is Red project was co-organised by the artistic group Lá Hors De, the theatre Divadlo na peróne, the citizen´s association IC Culture Train from Košice, the non-profit organisation French Alliance, and the ECOC Košice 2013 project team.
Lá Hors De
This artistic group was founded in 1992 by the stage director Nathalie Veuillet and the composer Wilfrid Haberey. The group targets the renewal and use of various urban places, either enclosed or open, which have stopped to serve their purpose. The group has for three years organised a festival at the abandoned ship´s hangar facilities, they have given an acoustic show at the parking lot of the lower dockside in Vaise and performances in one of the French cloisters and in the cellars of the Bondy palace, and others. In 2005, Là Hors De got inspired by the idea of some public institutions and settled down in the Duchère district in Lyon to launch a project known as Sputnik – an artistic cross-sector project carried out in different geographical areas with different participants. This is a crucial development project for the district of Duchère in Lyon referred to as GPV, i.e. Le Grand projet de ville (Great City Project). Find more at www.lahorsde.com
Divadlo na peróne
This theatre was founded in 2005 as an independent theatre scene. The theatre is based at the centre of contemporary arts known as IC Culture Train in Košice. The idea to found a theatre came up as a logical move in the creation of the theatre founders and members, namely Peter Kočiš, Zuzana Psotková and Jana Wernerová. The theatre is aimed at composite author´s works and aspires to attract young generation through the content and form they employ.
